1. Get Web Hosting and a Domain Name
The first thing you need to create a website is web hosting and a domain name.
What is a domain name?
Your domain name is the address of your website.
Example:
yourstore.com
This is what people type in their browser to visit your website.
What is web hosting?
Web hosting is a server that stores all files of your website and keeps it online 24/7.
It stores things like:
- Text
- Images
- Products
- Emails
- Website files
Once you have hosting and a domain name, your website becomes visible on the internet.
Many hosting providers also include:
- Free domain name for the first year
- Free SSL security
- Daily backups
- Email accounts
- Fast global servers
After purchasing hosting, you can immediately start building your website.
2. Install WordPress
Once you have hosting, the next step is installing WordPress.
WordPress is the most popular website builder in the world, powering more than 43% of all websites on the internet.
Why WordPress?
Because it allows you to create a website without coding.
WordPress lets you:
- Create pages
- Upload images
- Write blog posts
- Install themes
- Add plugins
All through a simple dashboard.
After installing WordPress, you will see the backend of your website, where you can manage everything.
3. Clean Up Your WordPress Website
When WordPress is first installed, it contains some default content that you don’t need.
It’s best to clean this up before building your website.
You can remove:
- Default pages
- Sample posts
- Unused themes
- Unnecessary plugins
Cleaning up your WordPress installation makes your website faster, simpler, and easier to manage.
4. Create a Professional Website Title
Your website title is important for SEO and branding.
Instead of using a generic title like:
“Welcome to my website”
Use something that describes your business.
For example:
Premium Sofas For USA & Canada | SofaSupa
This helps search engines understand what your website is about and improves your chances of ranking in Google.
5. Install the Blocksy Theme
Next, you need a WordPress theme.
A theme determines the design and layout of your website.
In this tutorial we use the Blocksy theme, which is:
- Fast
- Free
- Highly customizable
- Perfect for ecommerce websites
Blocksy also includes starter templates, which means you can import a complete website design with just one click.
This saves you hours of work.
6. Install WooCommerce
Now it’s time to install WooCommerce.
WooCommerce is the plugin that turns your WordPress website into an online store.
With WooCommerce you can:
- Sell physical products
- Sell digital downloads
- Sell services
- Accept online payments
- Calculate taxes automatically
- Manage orders
WooCommerce is used by millions of online stores worldwide.
Once installed, WooCommerce automatically creates essential pages such as:
- Shop
- Cart
- Checkout
- My Account
Your webshop is now ready to start selling products.
7. Customize Your Website
After installing WooCommerce, you can customize the appearance of your store.
You can change things like:
- Colors
- Fonts
- Logo
- Layout
- Menu structure
Using the WordPress Customizer, you can instantly see how changes affect your website.
This allows you to create a professional design without touching any code.
8. Creating Products in WooCommerce
A webshop revolves around products.
WooCommerce allows you to create different types of products depending on what you sell.
Let’s look at the most common product types.
Simple Products
A simple product has only one option.
Examples:
- A couch
- A book
- A lamp
You simply add:
- Product title
- Description
- Price
- Product images
Customers can then add the product to their cart and purchase it.
Variable Products
A variable product has multiple options.
For example:
A sweater with:
- Different sizes
- Different colors
Each combination becomes a variation.
Example:
- Small / Blue
- Medium / Blue
- Large / Black
WooCommerce allows you to manage inventory, prices, and images for each variation.
Service Products
WooCommerce can also sell services.
Example:
- Coaching call
- Consulting session
- Online training
These products are marked as virtual, which means they do not require shipping.
Downloadable Products
You can also sell digital products.
Examples include:
- eBooks
- Software
- Templates
- Courses
Customers receive a download link after purchasing.
This is powerful because you create the product once and can sell it unlimited times.
Affiliate Products
Another interesting option is affiliate products.
Instead of selling your own product, you promote someone else’s product and earn a commission.
Example:
You promote a software tool using your affiliate link.
When someone clicks the link and buys the product, you receive a commission.
Affiliate marketing is one of the most powerful ways to generate income online.
9. Customize Your Store Design
After creating products, you can further customize your store design.
You can adjust:
- Product layouts
- Product pages
- Buttons
- Colors
- Fonts
Small design improvements can significantly improve conversion rates and user experience.
10. Configure Shipping
If you sell physical products, you need to configure shipping costs.
WooCommerce allows you to create shipping zones.
For example:
- United States
- Canada
- Europe
Each zone can have different shipping prices.
You can also configure:
- Free shipping thresholds
- Weight-based shipping
- Price-based shipping
Example:
Orders above $200 receive free shipping.
This strategy encourages customers to spend more.
11. Configure Taxes
Taxes can be complicated, especially if you sell internationally.
WooCommerce allows you to configure taxes manually or automatically.
There are three main tax types:
- Standard rate
- Reduced rate
- Zero rate
For example:
- Standard products: 20%
- Books: 10%
- Digital products: 0%
You can configure taxes based on:
- Country
- State
- Product type
There are also plugins that automate taxes completely.
12. Add Payment Methods
To receive payments, you must connect payment gateways.
Two of the most popular payment gateways are:
Stripe
Stripe allows customers to pay using:
- Credit cards
- Apple Pay
- Google Pay
Stripe integrates directly with WooCommerce and is easy to configure.
PayPal
PayPal is another widely used payment method.
Many customers prefer PayPal because it is trusted and easy to use.
Adding both Stripe and PayPal gives your customers maximum flexibility when paying.
13. Managing Orders
When customers place orders, WooCommerce automatically stores them in the dashboard.
You can see:
- Customer information
- Purchased products
- Payment status
- Shipping address
Order statuses include:
- Processing
- Completed
- Cancelled
- Refunded
Once you ship the product, you simply mark the order as completed.
14. Email Marketing with Omnisend
Email marketing is one of the most powerful ways to increase ecommerce sales.
With Omnisend, you can:
- Collect email addresses
- Send newsletters
- Recover abandoned carts
- Send automated discounts
Email marketing helps you turn one-time buyers into repeat customers.
Creating a Discount Pop-Up
A great way to grow your email list is with a discount popup.
For example:
Get 10% off your first order.
Visitors enter their email address and receive a unique coupon code.
This benefits both sides:
Customers get a discount.
You grow your email list.
Automated Email Flows
Omnisend allows you to create powerful automations.
Examples include:
Welcome Email
When someone subscribes to your email list, they automatically receive a welcome email with a discount code.
Abandoned Cart Emails
If someone adds products to their cart but doesn’t purchase, they receive a reminder email.
This can recover a significant percentage of lost sales.
Follow-Up Emails
You can send follow-up emails to:
- Repeat customers
- High-value customers
- Inactive subscribers
Automation allows your store to generate additional sales automatically.
15. Customize Your Website Content
Once your store is fully configured, you can adjust the content of your website.
You can change:
- Homepage sections
- Product images
- Text content
- Buttons
- Background images
Using the WordPress editor, everything can be customized visually.
Final Thoughts
Congratulations.
You now know how to create a professional WooCommerce website from scratch.
You learned how to:
- Set up WordPress
- Install WooCommerce
- Add products
- Configure payments
- Set up shipping and taxes
- Automate sales with email marketing
Your store can now run 24 hours per day, allowing customers to purchase products anytime.
And with automation tools like email marketing, your store can generate more revenue with less manual work.
If you want to take your website even further, you can also learn about:
- SEO optimization
- Affiliate marketing
- Advanced email marketing strategies
With the right strategy, your WooCommerce store can become a powerful online business.

I cannot tell you how much I have learned from you – you have saved me so much time and energy & I am forever grateful and very appreciative. I am struggling in one area – I must have missed something – so I could sure use your help. I downloaded the entire website and followed along with the video. For whatever reason, in my header your video shows your navigation menu, shopping cart icon and search icon. When I downloaded the website and up through installing woocommerce, I get the navigation menu, but I do not have the shopping cart of search mag glass. Can you tell me where I went wrong with this? Thanks again – you are truly talented. the site has a countdown page now, so you won’t be able to view the header – which is basically the logo and pages. Appreciate any assistance you can offer.

everytime u create a website, is siteground offer you free to promote?
2019-08-05 14:39:36
No, I buy it everytime since I want the viewer to have a logical structure of the video. I show exactly what to do without skipping a step. Siteground does not sponsor me.
2019-08-08 06:09:30
Enjoyed your free tutorials and now subscribe to your newsletter. Think your approach works in getting people to buy through your affiliate links. Will be upgrading to Elementor PRO and; will be moving my web-host and domains from Bluehost to Siteground quickly.
Sadly I was unable to locate the product images to follow along with your Woocommerce tutorial. Other images were in the download but the product images were not. Just thought I would let you know!

Hi Ferdy, I have finally found someone I can understand, who doesn’t use abbreviations and tecky talk. Thank you so much and keep up the good work.
I want to open an online shop. I make fairy cottages using recycled materials. (It’s somewhere between Disney and Harry Potter). I have WordPress. Each piece is unique and I want to show all aspects in the photos. I am a beginner and the online world is a mine field for me. Could you recommend the best free e-commerce themes, SEO, security plug-ins etc that would be good for me. Many thanks. Colette
2019-10-17 23:07:17
you made a great job man, thank you.
2019-10-26 02:03:23
Hey Ferdy. Stumbled onto Your great tuts on Astra an ocean wp. I’ve been bulding my sites in Divi, but feel it’s painfully slow and cumbersome especially for ecommerce. Worldly You recommend ocean over Astra for a webshop or is it a draw? Appriciate any advice you can offer.
Best regards, Henrik Lindqvist, Sweden
2019-10-31 20:55:42
Dear Ferdy; thank you so much for your tutorials. I think I´m ready to start making my online store using woocommerce and Astra with the help of your videos. Would you please let me know which one I must install and set up first? I´ll appreciate a lot your guidance or any help in the process. Thank you so much in advance. Have a nice day.

2019-11-10 22:23:47
Just wanted to say thank you very much for the very thorough woo commerce tutorial, I really appreciate you taking the time to share and teach others. You have found another faithful subscriber!
I was curious, do you happen to have a video showing how to set up and collect payments from Paypal with Woocommerce? My cousin and I are getting ready to set up a new site and we have never done that before.
Thanks so much for all you do, your channel is awesome 🙂
2019-11-24 11:03:41

Hello Ferdy,
Bro you are real genius…..i have searched so many tutorials on wordpress…but your channel is THE BEST……Keep good work going… Please help me when ever any favour needed as far as technical knowledge is concern…
2019-12-12 16:21:59
Hi Ferdy.
Awesome tutorials you got. I used this tutorial to set up my online and I’m really thankful.
Can you please make a tutorial on how to easily sell a downloadable audio album where customers can choose to buy individual tracks in the album or buy the whole album outright at a reduced price just like the do it on stores like iTunes. You will find that an individual track in a 20 track album costs US$0.99 yet the entire album costs only US$9.9.
I have searched the entire web for plugins and tutorials on this particular set up but I have failed to find any. I followed you ‘group product’ section of your tutorial but it does not address my specific need at the moment.
Cheers
2020-01-06 12:18:18
Hey Ferdy, the download is not working. I get this error “There was an error submitting your subscription. Please try again.” on multiple browsers and emails.
Thanks
2020-01-09 00:46:40

Happy new years
2020-01-21 16:45:42
2020-01-22 00:14:56
I have used your tutorials from day one as I started learning WP rather than HTML & CSS using notepad and Dreamweaver as an Adobe CC affiliate – I never seem to get the images you use – to follow instruction without doing more work and creating my own. Which at the moment sort of like defeats the object as just want to learn that bit more with the layout then adapt to my own sites I am making thanks to you and a couple of others.
Besides this great tutor nonetheless.
2020-01-23 16:23:32
Yeah I still cannot get the images as a placement so had to download site. Although respect Ferdy and family very much.
2020-01-28 13:50:06
Hi Ferdy Korpershoek,
I hope you are fine, i am big fan of you. I have seen a lot of your Web development tutorials and still continuing the rest one,s. Your method to explain things is fabulous, keep it up. I have problem when importing/Migrating site with “All in one WP Migration” plug in, when import the downloaded file of website nothing happens after completion of 100% file upload bar and it,s stuck. Keep in mind the web site file size is below the allowed limit so i need to skip the process. Or tell me any other best alternative. I have used “clone” plug in but it,s very simple and do not have many options. Please make a complete tutorials about this and send me link..Thanks!

I am developing a site using Wampserver as a localhost and WordPress as the CMS. This lets me develop the site and upload it to a webhost so that it goes “live” immediately. I am using this tutorial as the building strategy. This means that all my paid webhosting contract time will be used fruitfully rather than using some of it developing a finished product.
This approach might prove a popular future tutorial for you to develop.
2020-06-26 18:04:58
Nice article. I’m saving into my bookmarks for future projects!
2020-07-03 22:39:52
Very lightly but great tutorial. I wish some pictures and formatting would be there, to increase readability. Thank anyway.
2020-07-08 08:22:59
Thanks for the tutorial, Ferdy.
2020-07-25 09:17:16
You’re so amazing Ferdy!
2020-10-16 18:02:57
Your tutorial looks very helpful, but I have a question about the best place to start.
Our church has a WordPress site. We want to add a holiday baazar to it using WooCommerce. But I don’t want to blow up the current site. I’m not sure of the best install path.
Our site is “https://ascvt.org”. Ideally, the link to the baazar would be either “ascvt.org/baazar” or “baazar.ascvt.org”
Auto-install. Sounds like it could blow up the existing site.
The other choice is the plugin. I have added many plugins to my site, so that’s ok. But I am not sure how it will handle users getting to the baazar.

nice work
2022-01-31 16:31:44
I really appreciate your work and blogs
2022-09-15 18:17:39
2022-10-17 16:08:20

Hey Ferdy, is it possible to repost the WooCommerce YouTube video that you had up before you went to the new video with the pre-made site templates from within the active site theme, such as OceanWP or Astra. I mean the long YouTube video that talked about how to upload your .wpress file that you provided from your website into WP All In One Migration plugin, as well as talked about how to build the whole e-commerce site. You were either using OceapWP theme or Astra theme in the video. The video that I’m talking about is quite a bit older, but I’m having a very difficult time finding it on YouTube. I’m not sure if you have taken it down at some point so as not to confuse your subscribers. If you can’t repost it, can you please send it to me via Google Drive or something like that? I have already built a site using that .wpress file method, and I would like to refresh my memory. Thank you.

My name is Glenda Wright I used your discount to subscribe but I may get a refund. I just bought a business account and I don’t see the sidebar nor the black header. My dashboard is completely different from yours. I cannot even find the plug-ins. I don’t see a menu that says plug-ins.
I just need some help before I decide to cancel it through PayPal. By the way, you have a very very good presentation on the tutorials of e-commerce WordPress.
Thank you, Glenda
